เมื่อสอบทานหลักฐานเอกสาร พบความตามหนังสือพระราชพิธีสิบสองเดือน พระราชนิพนธ์ของรัชกาลที่ ๕ ความตอนหนึ่งซึ่งกล่าวถึงตำนานปืนพระสุบินบันดาลในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๔ ระบุว่าครั้งหนึ่งเมื่อปลายสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงสุบินถึงปืนอย่างหนึ่งยิงได้ทีละหลาย ๆ นัด จึงได้มีการสร้างปืนขึ้นตามที่ทรงสุบิน แต่เมื่อได้ทอดพระเนตรก็ว่าไม่เหมือนที่ทรงสุบิน แต่ยิงได้หลายนัดคล้ายคลึงกัน และพระราชทานชื่อว่าพระสุบินบันดาล แต่ด้วยความที่ปืนนั้นยังสร้างมาไม่ตรงตามที่พระองค์ได้จินตนาการไว้ จึงมีการสั่งผลิตขึ้นอีกในภายหลัง ดังความที่กล่าวต่อไปว่า “พระแสงปืนอย่างเช่นทรงพระสุบินนั้น ภายหลังก็ทรงสั่งมาอีกจนได้ แต่พึ่งมาถึงภายหลังไม่ทันจะพระราชทานชื่อ”
ดังนั้น จากการตรวจสอบทะเบียนประวัติโบราณวัตถุ ตลอดจนการสืบค้นข้อมูลเพิ่มเติม จึงสันนิษฐานได้ว่าปืนใหญ่กระบอกนี้เป็นปืนใหญ่ที่สร้างขึ้นตามแรงบันดาลใจของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวที่ทรงพระสุบิน คงเป็นการสั่งผลิตเพิ่มเติมในภายหลังจากบริษัท Lepage Frères ประเทศฝรั่งเศส แต่ไม่ทันได้ตั้งชื่อปืนใหญ่กระบอกนี้ เพราะกว่าที่จะถูกนำเข้ามาก็สิ้นรัชกาลเสียก่อนนั่นเอง
